Solo travel El Salvador: A stay at Lake Ilopango- a hidden gem in El Salvador

I’ve always been drawn to exploring the off-the-beaten-path places and this is how I found myself exploring this hidden gem on a solo trip to El Salvador. Lake Ilopango is a beautiful lake found in El Salvador, one of the many stunning lakes in the country.  I was treated to breathtaking views, quiet, away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Ilopango Lake occupies an extinct volcano’s crater. The lake is approximately 25-30 minutes from the capital city,  San Salvador. The lake’s calm water offers such a serene and picturesque landscape.

Where to stay

Far from the typical tourist spots, I stayed at a boutique hotel called Las Tres Piedras. My hotel room had a panoramic view of the lake, which was simply breathtaking. The hotel is perched on the lake’s edge, a view that would make you want to stop and soak into the scenery.  This is a place to relax while enjoying the incredible view of the lake.

The room was spacious with a balcony offering a lovely view of the swimming pool and lake. The staff was very welcoming, and the majority of the staff spoke Spanish. WhatsApp was my main means of communication with the staff for any room orders or special requests. I have noticed that WhatsApp is a popular messaging app widely used in Central America, for ease of communication while traveling, I recommend downloading the app. Hosts or even tour companies are easily found on the app. In addition, another travel tip worth sharing is that learning a few conversational Spanish phrases as you explore El Salvador and other Central American countries might be helpful and it’s always a great way to connect with locals.

Things to do at Ilopango Lake

The Tres Piedras Hotel has a restaurant overlooking the lake with indoor and outdoor tables. Locals come out from the city to dine here on weekends. I had the opportunity to interact with friendly locals and sample a delicious traditional Salvadoran breakfast.

If you want to venture out, there are activities to try out around the lake. People can kayak, dip in the lake, etc. For this solo escape, I mostly spent my time on the swings by the hotel overlooking the lake or in the infinity pool. I have yet to explore much of El Salvador, and I hope to venture out again and experience more of the country. This was a perfect quick solo weekend escape with incredible, beautiful lake views.

Seeking a getaway where you can relax and reconnect with nature? I highly recommend visiting Lake Ilopango. This could be a day trip from San Salvador, which you can add to your list of things to do in El Salvador. The stunning views and peaceful atmosphere create a perfect destination for relaxation and adventure whether traveling solo, as a couple, or with your loved ones.
