Trying to figure out where to stay in Costa Rica for your first time? You’re definitely not alone. This is one of the top questions I get in my DMs from solo female travelers, couples, and 9 to 5 travelers trying to make the most of their limited PTO. Costa Rica is one of those destinations that has a little bit of everything, from the rainforest, beaches, volcanoes, waterfalls, cloud forests, surf towns, cozy eco-lodges tucked into nature, hidden gems, and everything in between.

This is the place where you can go ziplining in the morning, chase waterfalls in the afternoon, and unwind in natural hot springs at night. I’ve stayed in La Fortuna, and every visit reminded me why it’s a great home base.

Arenal Glamping: A cozy glamping experience surrounded by nature and beautiful views of Arenal Volcano. I stayed at Arenal Glamping and absolutely loved this glamping experience. The tents are beautifully designed, the surroundings are peaceful, and waking up with volcano views made the experience unforgettable. Airbnb vs. Hotel in Costa Rica: Which Should You Choose?
Is it better to stay in an Airbnb or a hotel in Costa Rica? After trying both, here’s my take. If you’re traveling solo, especially if you’re new to solo travel, I personally recommend sticking with hotels. They usually have 24/7 staff, etc., and give you that extra layer of comfort and safety when you’re adjusting to a new country. Costa Rica is generally safe, and I’ve felt comfortable exploring it on my solo trips. Because of that, staying in an Airbnb can still be totally fine, especially if you’re used to navigating new places on your own. But for first-time solo travelers, hotels just offer a smoother, more predictable experience.
Airbnbs, on the other hand, are amazing for groups, couples, or anyone who wants more space or the ability to cook their own meals. They’re also great if you’ve been to Costa Rica before and feel confident moving around on your own.
